Title: Cascaded gain control representations for visual images

Biological visual processing occurs in stages, and these stages appear to perform similar computations that can be approximated by linear filtering, rectifying nonlinearities, and locally adaptive gain control. The computational capabilities of such systems are not well understood, especially in their cascaded form. I’ll describe examples, in which such models can be used to capture physiological function, to explain perceptual capabilities, and as a substrate for engineered systems that must represent or display visual images.
